Women in Business: The Value of Doing Nothing
A couple of months ago, I made my annual trek to the United States to see my family, take care of administrative tasks for my consultancy, and attend a professional congress. About ½ hour into my flight, the pilot announced a technical problem and said that we needed to return to Paris to have our plane repaired.
While the waiting time was not “extra” time in my life, it did represent time not previously planned. What to do with it? There was no audio or video service on the plane, and I do not download movies or music to my computer. There was no WiFi available, so I had no opportunity to check e-mail or surf the Web. I had three “brain dump” books with me, but was reluctant to begin looking at their contents because I did not want to begin concentrating on the projects and ideas recorded in them only to be interrupted with periodic announcements about the flight. So I elected to:
Do nothing!
Most women solopreneurs are so busy during the workday that they never take a moment to simply relax and breathe. How many of us have the luxury of literally doing nothing during a given day . . . even if it is only for a few minutes? What does it feel like? Do we even remember?
Doing nothing can feel uncomfortable when we are accustomed to being “on” all the time – thinking about multiple, current projects at work, then going home and taking care of our responsibilities there.
Yet taking “do nothing” time is the best thing that we can do to rejuvenate our minds and spirits so that we can perform better when we return to our business projects and activities. I daresay that many of us have forgotten what it feels like to let our minds wander freely, and I consider this to be a great loss for us, both personally and professionally.
Doing nothing, even for five minutes, is the beginning of the end of overwhelm. Take some time today and try it! Leave your comments below to let me know how it feels!

Women in Business: A 6 Step Guide to Getting More Done in Less Time
Can you believe March is practically over?
Where does all the time go? If you are like me, you’re probably asking this same exact question. One thing’s for sure – time is a precious commodity.
You only have 1440 minutes per day, so make every minute count!
By maximizing your efficiency, you can complete every item on your to-do list and more.
Use these suggestions to help you get more done in less time:
1. Organization. Organization is the key to successful time management. Take a few moments before completing a task, whether small or large, and develop a time-saving game plan. Create checklists and set milestones. As you check the milestones off as scheduled, you’ll know that you’re on the right track.
2. Work in spurts. Are you procrastinating on getting started on a important time consuming task? Rather than dreading the hours of work ahead, work in spurts of 30 minutes (to start), with a five-minute break in between. However during these work spurts, it’s important to focus solely on the task at hand (no multitasking allowed). This will allow you 60 minutes of highly productive, well managed work time without fail.
3. Power-up correctly. In order to be efficient, it’s necessary to start the day off on the right foot. As you work hard to get everyone up and out the door on time, remember breakfast is still the most important meal of the day. Leave time for a healthy breakfast that produces high energy and stamina is key. Don’t forget about getting adequate rest too.
4. Find the quiet times. With a busy household, this probably means waking up early or staying up late. However your most alert hours are your best. So if neither time frame serves you, uncover alternative options and commit to it.
5. Free your mind. Distractions of many forms are ever present. However if you had to list which types are top offenders, mental preoccupations probably wouldn’t come to mind right way. Yet it’s so commonplace for busy working women soloprenuers. Don’t allow these thoughts to bog you down or take you away from the task at hand. Instead write down what you’re thinking about and then literally “schedule” time in your calendar to deal with these issues later.
6. Use “time-saving assets.” Housekeeping in many cases falls by the wayside when leading a busy life. Invest in items or services which permanently shave minutes off of your day (e.g. automatic shower cleaners, a lawn mowing service, a housekeeper, etc.). It may mean more money out of pocket, but isn’t regaining more time back week to week worth it?
Whether you’re hoping to better optimize time overall or looking for shortcuts to manage everyday responsibilities, it can be done. All you have to do is increase your level of efficiency and focus.
